Summa Labs is pleased to announce that Dr. Timo Aittokoski has joined the company as Director of Data Science to advance the next wave of biomarker-driven performance analytics and sensor innovation.
Dr. Timo Aittokoski is an engineering and data science leader holding a Ph.D. in mathematical information technology (global multi-objective optimization) and an M.Sc. in sports science (biomechanics) from the University of Jyväskylä.
With over two decades of interdisciplinary experience across computer science, sports science, and precision hardware, he has developed a diverse range of computationally intelligent control and analysis systems. Specifically, he has applied optimization methodology expertise to highly demanding engineering challenges – ranging from Airbus A380 wing spoilers and Grand Prix exhaust systems to tractor factory production lines and the placement of in-cabin noise-cancelling actuators.
He previously served as CTO and Chief Scientist at Emfit, where he architected and implemented the core systems, algorithms, and signal processing for the consumer-level Emfit QS sleep and recovery platform, as well as the AI-driven Emfit 24/7 system for intelligent post-surgery patient monitoring. As a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Jyväskylä's Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, he drove innovation in AI and data integration, developing deep learning algorithms for ECG peak quality assessment and intelligent methods for extracting reliable heart rate metrics from noisy, real-world signals. In contrast to his high-tech software developments, his passion for precision instruments is also evident in his work designing and manufacturing unique mechanical wristwatches (Aittokoski Watches) https://www.aittokoski.watch/ a craft that relies on centuries-old horological principles and heritage.
At Summa Labs, his work centers on integrating continuous hormone and contextual data streams into actionable intelligence to optimize performance across elite sport, clinical research, and other high-stakes environments.
